Many of the effects of pregnancy on the body may persist long after the child-bearing process. Unfortunately, many of these changes are resistant to diet and exercise. The pregnancy itself directly affects the abdomen as tissues are stretched. The potential lingering effects on the abdomen include:

  • Excess skin that may not have fully contracted down after childbirth
  • Formation of stretch marks
  • “Diastasis recti” – a condition in which the abdominal muscles are spread apart leading to a persistent outpouching of the abdomen
  • Persistent pockets of fat

The abdomen is not the only part of the mother’s body that is often dramatically changed with pregnancies. Before and after childbirth, hormonal changes can affect the breasts in dramatic ways. Consequently many women notice changes in their breasts which may include:

  • Loss of upper pole breast fullness
  • Stretch marks on the breast
  • The breasts hang lower
  • Complete loss of breast volume
  • Significant breast asymmetry

Mommy Makeover is a surgery or surgeries that help a woman look and feel more like she did prior to pregnancies and childbirth. It does not refer to a specific surgery but rather a personalized approach to the patient in addressing those areas she feels most interested in addressing. Most commonly these surgeries address both the abdomen by way of a tummy tuck and the breasts by way of breast augmentation, breast lift, or both lift and augmentation. In the appropriately selected patients, breast and abdomen procedures can be performed together in one operation. In other situations, it may be considered safer to separate the surgeries by at least a few months. It should also be noted that other surgeries may be considered part of the “mommy makeover” approach. These include procedures such as liposuction, arm lift, thigh lift, or facial rejuvenation procedures.
