In 2012, there was much hype about the latest implant devices to receive FDA approval: the highly cohesive, form-stable “gummy bear” breast implants. Much like the gummy bear candy, these new silicone implants do not leak when cut or punctured and, therefore, have a lower risk of implant rupture. Since saline and previous versions of silicone implants are still widely used and deemed safe by the FDA, many people wonder about the buzzword “rupture” and how durable breast implants actually are.

In my experience, women who come to see me regarding breast augmentation have typically been considering it for some time. It is rarely a decision they take lightly considering the risks, recovery time, and, yes, the cost among several other factors. Even after making the decision to move forward, a whole new series of options awaits. Each option will have pros and cons that are determined by the unique goals as well as the physical anatomy of the patient.

It has become commonplace. People everywhere have their faces constantly buried in their cellphones. Even when I am standing in an elevator, I notice that people are staring at their phones even though they can’t possibly have any service! Social media has exploded. People assess their personal or professional value based on “likes” and “followers.”

From time to time, I will see patients who are struggling with the fact that loved ones – whether it be a spouse, a parent, a sibling, or a friend – are fighting the patient on his or her decision to have plastic surgery. Sometimes it happens right in front of me during the consultation.

It is an all too common expression during the initial breast augmentation consultation. It’s that “I’m pretty sure I want to have this done but I’m nervous as hell about picking the right size” look. Patients tell me about a particular size implant a friend had. They mention that they want to be just one or two cup sizes bigger. They want to be bigger but not too big.
